This mini documentary explores fitness and physical readiness during military deployment, specifically addressing the disconnect between civilian perceptions and the lived reality of maintaining health in restricted environments. The project was designed to humanize deployment conditions while emphasizing discipline, adaptability, and routine under constraint.<\/p>\n
Assignment Parameters
\nCreate a complete soundscape emphasizing sound design
\nDevelop a proof of concept to test feasibility before production
\nExecute a video using B-roll sourced from a master shot list
\nIncorporate foley, sound effects, and music
\nMeet a strict time limit (approved overage due to narrative content)
\nShoot and edit RAW video files using the Blackmagic Camera App
\nProcess & Challenges<\/p>\n
This project was produced while deployed with the U.S. Army, which introduced significant creative and logistical limitations:<\/p>\n
Filming restrictions based on location and military regulations
\nNo access to a lighting kit; all visuals relied on available daylight or interior lighting
\nEnvironmental audio challenges\u2014multiple outdoor interview attempts failed due to wind interference
\nLimited filming windows due to operational schedules and population density<\/p>\n
To resolve these challenges, I pivoted from an outdoor interview to an interior self-interview, allowing for controlled audio capture while maintaining authenticity. Filming required subtlety and precise timing to avoid disrupting the environment or violating restrictions. Working as both filmmaker and subject added complexity, particularly in maintaining natural performance and pacing.<\/p>\n

This project reinforced my interest in documentary storytelling under constraint and deepened my understanding of sound as a narrative driver.
