Fitness: The Convenient Issue

Medium: Short Documentary Film Length: (add runtime) Context: Full Sail University – Film & Video Certificate Program Concept / Intent This mini documentary explores fitness and physical readiness during military deployment, specifically addressing the disconnect between civilian perceptions and the lived reality of maintaining health in restricted environments. The project was designed to humanize deployment conditions while emphasizing discipline, adaptability, and routine under constraint. Assignment Parameters Create a complete soundscape emphasizing sound design Develop a proof of concept to test feasibility before production Execute a video using B-roll sourced from a master shot list Incorporate foley, sound effects, and music Meet a strict time limit (approved overage due to narrative content) Shoot and edit RAW video files using the Blackmagic Camera App Process & Challenges This project was produced while deployed with the U.S. Army, which introduced significant creative and logistical limitations: Filming restrictions based on location and military regulations No access to a lighting kit; all visuals relied on available daylight or interior lighting Environmental audio challenges—multiple outdoor interview attempts failed due to wind interference Limited filming windows due to operational schedules and population density To resolve these challenges, I pivoted from an outdoor interview to an interior self-interview, allowing for controlled audio capture while maintaining authenticity. Filming required subtlety and precise timing to avoid disrupting the environment or violating restrictions. Working as both filmmaker and subject added complexity, particularly in maintaining natural performance and pacing. Reflection This project reinforced my interest in documentary storytelling under constraint and deepened my understanding of sound as a narrative driver. It also clarified my preference for being behind the camera during complex productions, a lesson that directly informed my next project.

Creative Brief

This documentary was developed for a Full Sail University assignment centered on narrative structure, sound design, and controlled production. I focused on fitness during deployment to challenge common civilian assumptions and document how discipline and routine are maintained within constrained environments. The piece shifts away from spectacle and instead emphasizes structure, repetition, and lived experience.

Production was shaped by real-world limitations including restricted locations, limited equipment, and environmental noise that prevented traditional interviews. These constraints led to a controlled indoor approach, reinforcing my ability to adapt under pressure while strengthening my use of sound and framing as primary storytelling tools.
